Build Your Best Swing This Winter: Starting with Posture

Winter greetings! It is that time of year that some put their golf clubs away, while others keep them active. Winter is a good time to reflect on your golf process and evaluate what worked well and what you want to work on for next year.  I recently took a position with Corban University as an Assistant Golf coach, focusing on golf instruction.

Interacting with college students has been a great learning experience, and reinforces what I already know – but also reveals new things. Golf allows you to keep learning. While the student golfers are off in the winter, they continue to work on their game for next spring.

Today I want to focus on posture. The golf posture is one of the core physical disciplines that sets you up for success in the golf process. When I start with a new student, we work on the following acronym:

GASP: G for Grip, A for alignment, S for stance, and P for Posture. If you get these right you will GASP when you hit a great shot.  Or at least I hope so.

Below is a picture of Scottie Scheffler's posture that I recommend copying for yourself. Notice where his posture is in relationship to the ball. Not hovering over it, nor back on his heels. His shoulders are square to the target. His back is not hunched over, and his chin and chest are up, rather than slouched. Even though it is hard to detect, his grip is not too tight. His feet are aligned well, along with his hips and knees. This winter I recommend looking at different pictures or videos of Scottie’s posture at setup and see if there are things you can adopt in your process. Have a great winter, and I hope you find some valuable insights as you prepare for next spring. Merry Christmas, 2025.
