Rediscovering Creativity as a Path to Healing and Connection

Rediscovering Creativity as a Path to Healing and Connection

By Destree Thompson, for The West Side Newspaper

In a culture that often prizes productivity over presence, many adults quietly lose touch with their creativity. They may not think of themselves as artists, but they miss making things simply for the joy of it. They stop writing, painting, singing, gardening, or exploring new ideas, convincing themselves that creativity belongs to someone else.

Yet creativity is about far more than artistic talent. It is a way of approaching life with curiosity, imagination, and openness. For many people, reconnecting with that part of themselves becomes a pathway to healing, resilience, and renewed purpose.

That philosophy is at the heart of The Artist’s Way, the best-selling book written by Julia Cameron. For decades, readers have used its practices to quiet self-doubt, challenge perfectionism, and rediscover the joy of creating without judgment.

While many people work through the book on their own, participating in a group offers something different. Gathering with others creates accountability, encouragement, and the reminder that creative blocks and self-criticism are nearly universal experiences.

One former participant reflected, “I enjoyed The Artist’s Way experience and our group from start to finish. Having a weekly meeting to discuss the book and connect with others always gave me something to look forward to, and it helped me grow each week. I learned more about myself and had the opportunity to dig deeper than I ever had before. I would do this again in a heartbeat.”

Experiences like these reflect the broader mission of The Enlighten Healing Collective: creating spaces where people can reconnect with themselves and one another through shared learning, honest conversation, and meaningful community. In a time when many people feel isolated or disconnected, gathering around creativity can become an unexpected source of belonging.

This fall, I will facilitate my final Artist’s Way workshop before passing the program on to another facilitator. The workshop invites participants to explore Julia Cameron’s practices in a supportive environment while discovering how creativity can enrich everyday life, regardless of profession or artistic background.

Whether you identify as an artist or simply feel a longing to reconnect with a forgotten part of yourself, the invitation is the same: to make space for wonder, play, and possibility. My final facilitated Artist’s Way workshop begins this fall at The Enlighten Healing Collective. Those
